College Hosts ‘Shave The Date’ for Locks of Love

The Christian Psychology Club at College of the Ozarks hosted a “Shave the Date” hair drive February 20th to collect donated hair for Locks of Love.

Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that collects donated hair for children suffering from hair loss due to terminal illness.

Its mission is to “return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need.”

CPC hosted the “Shave the Date” drive in order to offer students a fulfilling way to give back to others in need.

“This is what we are all about at College of the Ozarks,” said psychology major and CPC member Lizzy White. “Giving back to the community as much as we can--this is key.”

Amanda McKinney, a C of O student and hair donor, encourages others to give of something that they so easily have. “You should absolutely do it,” McKinney said. “You know hair grows back.”

Working with hair stylists from Hollister’s Take One studio, the Christian Psychology Club was able to collect 161 inches of hair from 13 College of the Ozarks students.

A repeat donor, C of O student Raylein Holley gives because of people in her life who have suffered hair loss. “Knowing that someone else is benefitting from something that I naturally have is a really good thing for me,” Holley said. “It’s like donating money but so much better because this is something that I can actually do for someone else.”
