College Cut-Off Mark Shows Nigeria Basic Education Is In Shambles

A Professor of Counseling and Psychology with University of Lagos, Ngozi Osarenren, has condemned the recent cut off mark annonuced  for entrance examination into the Federal Government Colleges (FGC), claiming that such a policy has revealed that the Nigerian education system is “in shambles.”

Speaking on Channels Television breakfast programme Sunrise Daily, Prof Osarenren described the situation where a student from the northern part of the country, gets a cut off mark as low as 2 points while a child from another part of the country, must get a higher cut off mark of 147 to be admitted in the same federal government.

She describes the policy as “scandalous” and “an act of mediocrity.

Prof Osarenren condemned the case where a child from Edo state was considered because he/she scored 127 while another child from another state was consider for scoring 45.

She added that such act might affect the child’s psychology in the school.

The Psychologist also described the case of Kebbi state where a female’s cut off mark is 20 and male is 9 as an act of discrimination.

She advised that there should be a cross board cut off mark.
