Closed Eyes Increase the Accuracy of the Memory Recall

According to the researchers of the University of Surrey, closing eyes during recalling the event augments the chances of accuracy.

To conduct this study, researchers showed fake crime scenes to the people and then checked their ability to recall the details.

The study is conducted to help the people to recall the memory more accurately when the police make interrogation of the crime scene. Making connection with the person asking the questions also enhances the accuracy of the memory recall.

The details of the study were published in the Legal and Criminological Psychology.

In the two different experiments, 178 people were tested.

In the first experiment, a short scene was shown to the participants in which an electrician entered the property to work and then stole the numbers of items.

After that, participants were divided into four groups. They have answered questions with their eyes opened or closed.  They were also questioned after with or without building sense of rapport.

It was found that people in the group having some rapport with the interviewer along with the close eyes during memory recalling had given three-quarters of the 17 questions correct.

The participants having eyes opened while answering with no friendly introduction with the interviewer had given 41 percent answers correctly.

The outcomes of this study showed that eye closing produced greatest impact on recalling the accurate details. Making friendly link is also a plus point here in remembering details.

In the second experiments, participants were asked to remember the details of what they heard during a mock crime scene.

Results showed that having a sense of rapport with the interviewer helped more in recalling details than any other group.

Dr Robert Nash, Lead researcher, said: “Closing your eyes might also help people visualize the details of the event they are trying to remember, but our second experiment suggests keeping your eyes shut can help focus on audio information too.”
