MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- An increased need for research, planning and advocacy for children and adolescents, along with heightened state and local emphasis on advanced training for early child care professionals, is driving professionals in the field to enhance their knowledge and skills. In response to these trends, Walden University is adding a new specialization, Child and Adolescent Development, to its recently streamlined M.S. in Psychology program. Walden is one of the few universities in the country to offer this specialization online.

Walden's updated and streamlined master's program in psychology allows students to earn a degree with 45 credits and in as little as 15 months. By reducing previous tuition costs by $4,500, the M.S. in Psychology is now one of the most affordable such master's programs offered online.

"Designed for the working professional, our new Child and Adolescent Development specialization provides students with the practical tools they need to help children and teens in a variety of settings as well as explore diverse factors affecting youth's physical and mental health and illness," said Dr. Marilyn Powell, associate dean of the School of Psychology. "Students also learn to apply behavior analysis to support positive change. The aim is to promote positive and healthy behaviors through a process of observation, evaluation and advocacy for intervention."

In addition to the new specialization, students in the program can choose from 11 other career-focused specializations that reflect the latest developments in their fields. Students enrolling in the Applied Psychology, Educational Psychology, General Psychology, Health Psychology, Organizational Psychology and Social Psychology specializations can apply credits from the M.S. in Psychology program toward a Ph.D. in Psychology, saving time and money in earning their doctorate.
