CFCC names new dean, athletic director

McGee will be responsible for interpreting and setting standards related to student conduct and maintaining compliance with state and federal law, according to a release. He also will enforce the College's Code of Conduct.

McGee attended East Carolina University in Greenville, where he earned a degree in psychology and a master's degree in counseling psychology.

In addition to leading all of CFCC's athletic programs, Mantlo will continue to serve as the head coach of CFCC's men's basketball team.

Mantlo, 34, has helped grow CFCC's athletic profile with his success on the basketball court. His Sea Devils have earned four trips to the national junior college tournament, including both of the past two years. They scored a first-round upset in March before falling to Northwest (Wyo.) College.

CFCC is slotted eighth nationally by The Sporting News in its preseason NJCAA Division I rankings. Mantlo will try to lead the team to another Region X title as he adapts to his increased role.

“It's going to be difficult, at first, just learning the parameters of the job, I think,” Mantlo said. “The day-to-day aspect, I don't think there's going to be a ton that changes with the exception of making that final call with coaches and just a little more responsibility.”

McGee started as a soccer coach at CFCC in 1999 and led the department's rise from a club athletic program into its current form with six intercollegiate sports and increasing ambition for further development. His new position is part of a reorganization at the school under new President Amanda Lee.

Mantlo previously held the assistant athletic director title and helped McGee manage the department's daily operations. He hopes to continue toward many of the goals set by his former boss, notably the planned multimillion-dollar renovation of the Schwartz Center.

“There's a great foundation that Robby has built,” Mantlo said. “I think we're on the brink of really taking this thing to the next level, so I'm excited to get in here at this time and help try to boost the facilities and help every sport get onto that national stage and give Cape Fear the name that it deserves.”
