Casual Sex Can Increase Confidence, Happiness (If You’re a Narcissistic Man)

A recent study published in the journal Social Psychological Personality Science found that the potential positive or negative outcome of a casual sex experience, more than anything, depends on an individual's personality.

Lead study author and New York University (NYU) psychology professor Zhana Vrangalova recruited 371 undergraduates at a northeastern U.S. university, asking them to complete a surgery in order to determine their "sociosexual orientation." The survey assessed past behavior, current levels of sexual desire and cultural attitudes toward sex. The participants were then surveyed regarding their sexual behavior, feelings about the sex they'd had and general well-being over a nine-month period.

Study findings revealed that participants who reported themselves as more sexually permissive were more likely to engage in casual sex throughout the study period than those who self-reported lower on the sociosexual scale. Those who were more frequently engaged in casual sex also reported higher levels of self-esteem and lower rates of depression.

Despite previous studies that hold a "one-size-fits-all" rather sexist stereotype, the results may say something about the benefits of casual sex... for some people.

The study concluded that (similar to some stereotypes), more participants who rated themselves higher on the sociosexual scale were more likely to be "extroverted" and "impulsive" men who carried the physical attributes of physical strength and "more sexist, manipulative, coercive and narcissistic" tendencies than peers, according to the Pacific Standard.

Whatever your sexual preferences are, safe sex is an essential component of any encounter. Make sure you take all necessary precautions to protect yourself.
