Carl Jung Circle: Circus of Dreams

Dr. Dido Gustilo Villasor, CJCC chair remarked, “[The art fair] Circus of Dreams is the third time that artist using different mediums are coming together to express unique images and symbol of the self.”

“The theme of the art fair encompasses dreams, fantasy, reverie and objects of attention and beauty by CJCC’s participating artists. Rich material from the psyche, whether in our nocturnal state or in our imagination, are brought forth by the artists and captured in their expression through canvas and glass paintings, pen and ink illustrations, photography, sculpture, knitted creations and interesting furniture pieces,” Rose Yenko, CJCC chair emeritus explained.

“Working with dream images or images from reverie and fantasy, these speak to us of who we are, and the artistic expression becomes a container, a bridge, to explore the polarities and mystery embedded in these symbols.”

Here are the Artists’ Statements:

“‘I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.” -- Pablo Picasso. This statement is encouraging for someone like me.” -- Dido Gustillo Villasor (CJCC Chair)

“This set was inspired by my dream: that of a very beautiful Chinese Opera figure [who exuded a mysterious fragrance] who emerged from the murky waters of the Estero de Binondo -- dancing gracefully while balancing on a tightrope. The anima presenting herself as the mythical virtuous female from ancient Chinese stories. To honor this dream. I created three pastel paintings which are not only pictures of famous women from the centuries-old Beijing Opera repertoire -- but also a triptych of the anima’s multiple facets / emanations.” -- Jose Alain Austria

“‘Cook Love with Wild Abandon’ is a poster sticker I saw in my sister’s kitchen. I took it as a challenge to translate it into sculpture. -- Alex Tee

“My works come to me through inspiration. Beauty and knowledge come together with each new creation. My need for expression brings forth a variety of interpretations that fulfill my emotions. This time I feel brightness that shines towards a future that is filled with hope and tranquillity.” -- Cookie Guerrero

“I knew my knitting moved from hobby to passion when I would become excited over the feel of different yarns or when I discover new patterns. Passion disables limitations, turns possibilities into realities and fuels creativity.” -- Maureen Sandejas

“‘If art is an expression of the soul, then creating art is the journey toward it...’ Art is my life. I explore ideas, interpret concepts, embrace imagination, listen to insights and inspirations, trust the process, learn about myself and the world, and have fun while doing it!” -- Oliver Yang Roxas

“I am a wanderer and a seeker, most of the time in the journey, deep in blissful thought. Unmindful, yet reflective. Lost, yet found. As I am, at those moments, connected to the core of my being.” -- Rene M. Samaniego

“I have a third eye -- the camera. Though it sees only the images within its frame, the captured composition would not have been noticed by the naked eye. The photo produced from the shot is just a very small part of the whole vista that is unfolding before me. The entire scene could be beautiful, yet the snippet of an image captured by my camera is beautiful on its own. A whole scene is, for me, a trove of various wonderful pictures -- all part of one image.” -- Reni Orayani

“My work explores vulnerability in the process of creation. This breaks away from what I usually do as an artist in the field of advertising... In my paintings, I respond to the interaction of my tools and medium and the emergent qualities of the picture as it is being formed. It is a very reflexive relationship, a conversation in which there is less planning and design, but an openness to the unexpected. There is a conscious effort to give up control, thus allowing spontaneity, accidents... to embrace the familiarity and the immediacy of influences from fashion and popular culture.” -- Ricky Villabona

“I work as a clinical psychologist, teacher, consultant. An avid learner of Philippine history, literature, and anthropology, I dabble in art -- pottery, sketching, and now, glass painting.” -- Sandy C. Ebrada
