Buddhist practice of mindfulness can be useful in therapy

Since its origins, Buddhism has been appreciated by many researchers as a way to advance psychology. Reflecting on Buddhism, William James observed, “This is the psychology everybody will be studying 25 years from now.” Through mindfulness meditation, which arose in Buddhism, James’s prediction might be coming true.

Mindfulness in psychology and Buddhism is a way to gain space between the habitual patterns of thought, emotion, and behavior that often cause people to suffer. Because of the broad acceptance of mindfulness in psychology, mindfulness is also emerging as a training methodology to improve relationships and overall outcomes in therapy. Mindfulness is becoming more than just an important dimension of therapy; it is one of the basic therapeutic orientations in psychotherapy.
