Women's tennis ESU 7, King's 2

WILKES-BARRE — East Stroudsburg University won two doubles matches, two of the three three-set singles matches and had a pair of straight-set wins at the top of the lineup to come away with a 7-2 win over King's College in non-conference women's tennis Monday.

ESU got singles wins from senior Amanda Kaufman at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2), freshman Allison Bean at No. 2 (6-3, 6-0), freshman Elizabeth Longenhagen at No. 4 (3-6, 6-4, 10-6), sophomore Allison Schafer at No. 5 (6-3, 7-5) and freshman Taylor Presby at No. 6 (6-4, 5-7, 10-4).

Rabecca Lausch and Longenhagen had an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles and junior Annie Vega and Presby won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles to open the day.

Kaufman's win was her 49th overall in singles action in her four years at ESU and her 41st at No. 1 in duals going into this weekend's PSAC Individual Championships at Bloomsburg. She improved to 12-2 this spring and 14-6 overall as a senior.

She will have an opportunity to join former teammate Jamie Ferrigno, who won 52 matches from 2008-11, as 50-win players for the Warriors. Katie D'Ambrosia, last year's PSAC East Player of the Year, finished with 49 singles wins. D'Ambrosia and Ferrigno both had 59 doubles wins, including a 55-27 record when paired together.

ESU finished the 2011-12 season with a 6-16 record after reaching postseason play for three straight seasons, including a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2010. The Warriors won five of their final seven duals this spring.

College sports ESU celebrates National Student-Athlete Day

EAST STROUDSBURG — East Stroudsburg University marked the 25th anniversary of National Student-Athlete Day by honoring the academic achievements of its student-athletes on Tuesday afternoon.

The program, assembled by Professor Nancy Jo Greenawalt, Academic Coordinator for Athletics, recognized exceptional work in the classroom by the Warriors' student-athletes, as well as those who have represented ESU at the national level.

The 2011-12 Athletic Director's Honor Roll is comprised of 161 student-athletes, or 34% of ESU's total number of student-athletes, who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 while participating in one of the university's 20 varsity sports.

Twelve student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for the fourth straight year — Josh Hontz and Dan Johnson (men's track and field), Lisa Lower and Sarah Wysocki (women's track and field/cross country), Tesla Atkins, Maureen Ordnung and Michelle Tewell (field hockey), Molly McLenigan (lacrosse), Josh Arcona (men's soccer), Elva Composto and Devon Miniscalco (women's soccer) and Rachel Gieringer (softball).

The 11th annual team academic achievement awards went to the men's soccer team, which received the award for the second time, and women's volleyball team, which received the award for the third straight year and the fifth time overall. ESU's student-athletes posted a cumulative GPA of 2.94 through the fall semester.

Two student-athletes, junior cross country/track and field standout Rose Mascoli and junior men's soccer forward Nemanja Nikolic, were recognized as Capital One Academic All-America selections in the last 12 months.

ESU's five additional Academic All-District selections since last spring — Eric Boyer (baseball), Josh Hontz (men's track and field), Corinne Fitzgerald (women's track and field/cross country), Khriswayne Wallace (men's soccer) and Ashley McKenna (women's soccer) — were also recognized. ESU has had a total of 48 Academic All-District honorees in the last five years, with teams still to be selected for baseball, softball, men's and women's track and field/cross country and men's and women's at-large later this spring.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, including President Rabecca Lausch (tennis), Vice President Rose Mascoli, Secretary Megan Plumb (volleyball) and Treasurer Kaitlin Blum (field hockey/softball), was mentioned for its contributions to ESU and the experience of its student-athletes. Plumb served as the guest speaker and spoke about community service opportunities and the responsibilities that student-athletes have to impact their campus and those around them.

The "Winning Warrior Award" was presented to President Dr. Robert J. Dillman, who is retiring after 16 years serving the ESU campus, its faculty, staff, students and student-athletes.

Dr. Shala Davis, chair of the Exercise Science Department and ESU's Faculty Athletics Representative for the last eight years, was also recognized for her service as FAR, which will come to an end at the conclusion of the academic year.

More than 30 faculty, administration and staff members received special invitations to the event after being identified by student-athletes for serving as role models, mentors and advisors during their academic careers.

Professor Greenawalt, Director of Athletics Dr. Tom Gioglio and Dr. Mark Kilker, Dean of the College of Health Sciences, provided the opening remarks. Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Doreen Tobin was involved in presenting the team and individual awards.
