According to a recent British Psychological Society member survey over 80 per cent of respondents consider themselves to be working within the field of psychology.

The Member Data Survey was circulated to BPS members last year and with over 5,300 submitting responses. The results of the survey are summarised below.

• 53.9 per cent of respondents are in full time employment. 19.6% of respondents are self-employed.

• 61.2 per cent of respondents are employed in the public sector.

• 45.9 per cent of respondents are employed in the human health employment sector and 30.3 per cent in education.

• 82.3 per cent of respondents consider their job to be in the field of psychology.

Dr Mark Forshaw, Chair of the Membership and Standards Board, said:

“Thanks to everyone who took the time to contribute. This is the first time the BPS has surveyed its members and it’s good news to see so many are working within the discipline. The information will help us develop a fuller profile of the profession, be more influential on workforce planning issues and develop new resources and services to benefit our members. It will also give us more targeted access to appropriate member expertise when needed.”
