7 P.M. RIVER BAR, SOMERVILLE

BRAINY BEGINNINGS

KEVIN I listened to some happy music to put myself in a good mood.

DANA I made sure I had chill time ahead of the date. I made myself some tea. I also Yelped the River Bar to see what was good on the menu.

KEVIN I was pretty calm.

DANA I told myself at best I would meet someone I had something in common with and at worst it could be a funny story to tell.

KEVIN I ended up arriving about 20 minutes early. I took a walk along the river and then went into the restaurant.

DANA I got there right at 7; my date had already been seated. He was cute in that intelligent/nerdy kind of way.

KEVIN The first thing I noticed was she was wearing a really nice necklace, and she had pretty eyes.

DANA Because we were both positively freezing, we started our date by each getting some mulled wine to warm up.

OPEN-MINDED

KEVIN The menu was very unusual. Not bad, but different. It gave us stuff to talk about.

DANA It was definitely not traditional fare. But we were feeling adventurous, and I can now say that I know what a fried Scotch quail egg is.

KEVIN That one was actually my favorite.

DANA I made the mistake of ordering an entire fish. I just crossed my fingers that I would not choke on a bone on this date.

KEVIN The big discovery was that we are both Philadelphia Eagles fans. That definitely made me like her more.

DANA We found a bunch of overlapping interests. We both used to run track in high school and college. We shared Philadelphia football allegiances — Go Eagles! He seemed genuinely interested in what I do for a living. I was impressed when I gave my typical synopsis and started to change the subject but he wanted to ask me more.

DIVIDED THOUGHTS

KEVIN Dana seemed like a cool person. She had a lot of funny and interesting stories, but to be honest I didn’t feel like there was romantic chemistry.

DANA He seemed to have a lot of diverse interests, compared to recent dates where the guys have felt one-note. We were on our date for 2.5 hours. I began to worry he thought I talked too much.

KEVIN I called an Uber and we both went outside to sit by a fire and chat while I waited for my ride. Dana kept me company for a bit and then left.

DANA I made the move to suggest getting together again and we exchanged numbers. We gave each other a hug.

A SECOND DATE?

KEVIN I would be down to hang out as friends, but I don’t think we’ll date.

DANA Last we left it, we had been open to it.
