‘Live long enough to become a burden to your children,” said the sign in the delivery suite at Wellington Hospital. Well, my daughters, Gabrielle and Hannah, have just turned 21. According to some authorities, I have discharged my parental duty – they’ve survived long enough to leave home. Yussss, and fist-pump.

Twenty-first birthdays are a big deal. Birthdays can mark changes in status, bringing with it increased freedom (even if only to do something stupid), and are causes to get together with family and friends to celebrate life.
