Bill to Ban Religious Discrimination In College Grad Programs Clears Committee

LANSING (WHTC) - A local lawmaker’s bill that would ban discrimination against college students who are studying counseling, social work and psychology for religious reasons has passed a House committee. The House Education Committee Wednesday approved the bill, sponsored by Rep. Joe Haveman of Holland, which would prohibit discrimination against students in those fields for what he terms “sincerely held religious beliefs.” The bill came in response to the case of an Eastern Michigan University student who was booted from a graduate school program in counseling three years ago after she asked to refer a client to another counselor because the client’s file indicated past discussion of a gay relationship. The student’s religious beliefs view homosexuality as morally wrong.
