Applied Psychology graduate gives careers talk to students

Applied Psychology alumna, Helena Tucker returned to the LJMU recently to give a talk to students about pursuing a career as a Clinical Psychologist.

Helena, who graduated from LJMU in 2010, feels that engaging with the World of Work Careers Centre early in her studies was a vital factor in helping her to plan her career goals and address any potential areas for development.

She was also one of the first students to complete LJMU’s World of Work Skills Certificate alongside her degree; something which not only gave her confidence for postgraduate course interviews, but also highlighted the need to get relevant work experience on her CV while studying.

“I studied Applied Psychology at LJMU and absolutely loved the course. I particularly enjoyed the elements of applying psychological theory to practise. I really appreciated the opportunity to engage with the World of Work Careers Centre," said Helena. "I took part in employability workshops and completed the World of Work Skills Certificate. This highlighted the importance of getting relevant work experience whilst studying and helped me to think more strategically about my career after university. I was also given advice on my job applications and completed a mock job interview at the World of Work Careers Centre. The interview was tailored to a job I was applying for and I was provided with much helpful feedback. The process gave me confidence when going for those first much feared postgraduate job interviews. I am now in my first year of the Clinical Psychology Doctorate training and LJMU was a great start to my career.”
