A broad network of positive relationships is crucial to our happiness and well-being, says Dr Deirdre MacIntyre clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for Child Education and Psychology Europe.

“People with strong social relationships and a wide network of contacts have been shown to be happier, healthier and to even live longer,” she says, adding that even the ‘flu vaccine has been proven to be more efficient in happy people with robust relationships.

“Reach out. Visit a relative you haven’t seen in a long time,” she suggests.

Try re-connecting with a loved one you haven’t been in touch with lately - this could mean visiting a family member, or interacting more frequently with elderly relations.

Make a point of chatting, at least once a month, with someone with whom you may not have been in contact with regularly up to now, advises Macintyre.

“The key to your physical and psychological well-being is a broad network of good relationships which creates a sense of belonging, increases your positive emotions and benefits your mind and all of this boosts your immune system.”
