What we see is just our Prediction?

In a recent study, researchers have found that the brain works to fool the human body, and leads them to believe that they have a sharp vision and they see the world uniformly detailed. Findings of the study were published in the journal of Experimental Psychology.

Dr. Arvid Herwig from the Neuro-Cognitive Psychology research group of the Faculty of Psychology and Sports Science said that in the study, they tried to find out why humans believe that they see the world uniformly detailed.
The group is affiliated to the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) of Bielefeld University and is led by Professor Dr. Werner X. Schneider.

It is believed that we can only see a small area of our surroundings in a sharp detail. However, all visual impressions that occur outside the fovea, known as the central area of the retina, gradually become coarse.

For the study, the researchers took an in-depth look at the idea through a series of experiments. These experiments were intended to determine how people learn through countless eye movements over a lifetime to connect the coarse impressions of objects that are outside the fovea to the detailed visual impression after the eye has moved to the object of the interest.

Researchers used the eye-tracking experiments to test the approach, along with the technique that harnessed a specific camera that can record 1,000 images per second. They even recorded the fast ballistic eye movements.

Findings of the study revealed that the connection between a coarse and detailed visual impression happened just after some time. Researchers found that the coarse visual impressions became similar to the newly learnt detailed visual impressions.

Central findings of the research showed that the nervous system uses the past visual experiences to predict how blurred objects would looks in sharp detail.

Arvid said, "The experiments show that our perception depends in large measure on stored visual experiences in our memory".

Arvid and Schneider said that these experiences signify that we do not see the actual world, but whatever we see are our predictions.
