Use reverse psychology to get boys to read, says Nick Hornby

Renowned author Nick Hornby has suggested using reverse psychology as a way of getting boys interested in books.

Telling boys that they should not read books could be an effective way of promoting reading, he suggested, as this is a technique he used with his own son, telling him a book was 'highly inappropriate' to keep him engaged with it, the Telegraph reports.

Mr Hornby said: "I used to be a teacher, and I know how difficult it is to strike a balance between focused conversation and an atmosphere that prevents creativity and thought."

He added that he told his son that Sherman Alexie's young adult novel 'The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part-Time Indian' was one of the most banned books in America, with the result that he raced through it.

Mr Hornby is set to participate in a panel discussion about his writing process and how to encourage children to read and write within the first worldwide gathering of writing centres taking place in London.
