Top speakers for conference on sports science, psychology

KUCHING: The Sukma International Sports Science and 2nd Malaysian Sports Psychology Conference 2016 is on track to feature internationally renowned speakers and top local speakers on current developments and findings on May 10-12.

Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem is expected to open the conference to be held at Imperial Hotel here on May 10, and which will be closed by the minister-in-charge of sports on May 12.

The conference, held in conjunction with Sarawak as host for the 18th Sukma this July, is organised by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) in collaboration with Institute of Teacher Education Tun Abdul Razak Campus, Institute of Teacher Education Batu Lintang Campus and UiTM Sarawak. In addition, the event also received support from the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and Sarawak Education Department.

The conference provides an ideal opportunity for interaction and exchange of information between sports scientists, athletes and practitioners as sports has evolved scientifically over the years and must be up-to-date with the latest findings for Sarawak Sports to grow significantly, said SSC CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee, who is also Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) director and conference’s chair, through a press statement yesterday.

Among the key-note speakers are Prof Peter Terry (Aust), Prof Mike Hughes (Eng), Prof Zhang Li-Wei (Ch), Prof Frank Lu (Twn), Prof Low Wah Yun (UM, M’sia) and Emeritus Prof Tony Morris (Aust) as guest speaker.

Other prominent invited speakers are Prof Suyen Liu (Twn), Prof Zhijian Huang (HK), Assistant Prof Naruepon Vongjaturapat (Thai), Prof Young-Ho Kim (S Kor), Dr Marissa Luisa Adviento (Phi), Dr Emily Ortega (S’pore), Associate Prof Hairul Anuar Hashim (USM), Dr Garry Guan (USM), Dr Mohd Nizam Jawis (USM), Dr Lim Boon Hooi (UM), Dr Vincent Teo Eng Wah (UM), Dr Tengku Fadillah Tengku Kamalden (UPM), Dr Jeffrey Low Fook Lee (UPSI), Dr Ayu Sazailina Mohamad (USM), Dr Kueh Yee Cheng (USM), Dr Mohd Nizam Nazarudin (UMS), Dr Ler Hui Yin (TAR UC), Dr Jolly Roy (ISN), Dr Rebecca Wong (ISN) and Dr Chin Ngien Siong (IPGKTAR).

Dr Ong called upon all various governmental, non-govermental and sports organisations; athletes, fitness enthusiasts, Physical Education and Sports Science teachers, coaches and practitioners to participate in the conference as it is currently the largest sports science conference to be held in Sarawak.

The conference is endorsed by the Asian-South Pacific Association of Sports Psychology (ASPASP), International Society of Performance Analysis of Sports Asia (ISPASA) and Malaysian Sports Psychology Association (MASPA). All the council members of ASPASP; Prof Mike Hughes, president of International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport and Dr Tengku Fadillah Tengku Kamalden, president of the International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport Asia, are also speakers for the conference.

Apart from Dr Ong, the other co-chair is Hamsiah Abdullah Masni from IPGKTAR (Institute of Teacher Education Tun Abdul Razak Campus), IPGKBL and UiTM Sarawak for their joint collaboration in hosting this conference.

Sarawak Education Department director Rakayah Madon said her department will give its fullest support for physical education and sports science teachers, educators and officers who wish to attend the Sukma conference as it is a form of professional development that benefits teachers, students and the community. Hamsiah Masni expressed her gratitude to Rakayah for her tremendous support.

Early bird registration fee of RM350 for locals and USD200 for foreign participants and RM100 for full-time local students is before March 21. Closing date for registration is April 18.
