The Psychology Behind Being A Super Fan

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The sports world isn't just a hobby for Kathryn Macziewski. It's her business.

Macziewski owns a A League Of Your Own in downtown Sioux Falls. Before the clothing shop, she worked in merchandise for the Minnesota Vikings.

"At times it can almost be scary because people are so into their team. I've seen many fights break out verbally and physically when I've attended games," Macziewski said.

What creates these so-called super fans? To find out, we asked therapist Karla Harmon.

"The number one reason for becoming a fan of a certain team has a lot to do with people's memories," Harmon said.

That means that if your parents or grandparents followed a particular team growing up, you're more likely to become and stay a fan.

"They had food and camaraderie, and it was an event. They will stay loyal to that particular team," Harmon said.

You're also more likely to stay loyal if you grew up living by a team.

"No matter how far they move, they can go back to that team because that's reminiscent of their roots and who they are," Harmon said.

When you're a fan of a team, you also become part of a bigger community, which can be helpful for some.

"The spirit of belonging or the feeling of belonging that we all as human beings have a need for can very ideally be met through being a fan of a sports team," Harmon said.

That sense of belonging can be a self esteem booster and can even cause chemical changes. Researchers have found that extreme sports fans actually have an increase in testosterone levels after a victory and a decrease after a loss.

"It can also really rev you up. You go into your excitement mode and can get chemical stimulation," Harmon said.

A sense of excitement that Macziewski knows about all too well.

"That's when you have the really true fans. They've grown up with it, and that's what they've known," Macziewski said.
