Thursday night’s new episode of “The Big Bang Theory” was all about psychology … or at least the psychology that goes into Penny trying to pull something over on a therapist of all people.
In what has to be one of the most ill-fated ideas ever, Penny decided that in order to get a therapist (Jane Kaczmarek, awesome as always) to convince her to potentially hear her out about a drug she is pushing for her job, she had Leonard go undercover as a patient. Here’s the problem: This brought up all sorts of tough stuff from Leonard’s past, the majority of it being stuff that was probably not great to be reminded of. For him, it went all back to his mother, and that’s where it went when the doctor finally admitted Penny to her office. She went from pushing medication to being prescribed medication after some parallels were drawn between her and Leonard’s mom. Meanwhile, he was out reliving his childhood with jump rope. This was a random, but funny, way to end this episode.
“Strange” may be one of the better ways to describe what was ultimately thirty minutes of filler. Sure, Stuart did move out, which may be the beginnings of Howard and Bernadette thinking about if they want a larger family. That’s an easy parallel to draw when you look at the empty-nest syndrome that they were dealing with after he left.
Sheldon getting to name an asteroid after Amy was a sweet moment … but not so much when she realized that he made a trade with Raj for the name of any of their potential children. We really wonder now if that will bear any fruit in the future.
In the end, this episode had some funny moments, but we only think we’ll remember it if any of the events that took place actually have a larger impact down the line. Grade: B-.
