Conference to Emphasize Undergraduate Psychology Research
Students from 4 Universities to Present Projects, Discuss Graduate Study Options

Undergraduate psychology majors will get a chance to display their research accomplishments at an upcoming conference sponsored by UT Dallas and other area universities.
The North Texas Undergraduate Psychology Conference will take place on UT Dallas’ main campus in Richardson, but it represents a joint effort by psychology departments at Southern Methodist University, Texas Woman’s University and The University of Texas at Arlington, as well as UT Dallas. The conference was funded in part by a grant from Psi Chi, the international psychology honor society, to UT Dallas’ newly established chapter.

The April 20 conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. Marion Underwood, Ashbel Smith professor and head of the master’s program in psychological sciences at UT Dallas. Underwood researches socially aggressive behavior and the outcomes associated with engaging in and being the victim of social and physical aggression. Her talk to the undergraduates will offer guidance on how they can launch their own research careers.
The conference also will include a panel discussion of graduate school programs in psychology, with suggestions from area faculty members about how to prepare for admission.
The day will conclude with the student poster presentations. Students will present findings from class projects, directed research studies and senior theses.
Dr. Melanie Spence, associate dean in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS), said the symposium will offer a great opportunity for undergraduates to share ideas and learn more about different graduate schools in the area.
“Our students are involved in many different research activities, and we are excited to have this opportunity to showcase this work,” she said. “Students who participate in the conference will also learn about graduate study within area psychology programs and can network with students and faculty from these other schools.”
