Juniata College holds commencement
Three hundred and twelve seniors were awarded Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees on Saturday, May 18, during ceremonies marking Juniata College’s 135th Commencment.
Alyssa Lauren Bernstein of Westbrook, daughter of Dr. Jeffery Bernstein and Terry Bernstein, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and was a member of the Juniata College women’s soccer team, received the Presidential scholarship, served as the 2 year president and social events chair of the Juniata College Hillel Chapter and successfully organized and led 3 alternative Spring Break trips through Hillel to Argentina, New Orleans, and the Domincan Republic. Bernstein is a 2009 graduate of Westbrook High School.
Chelsea Elizabeth Veranis of Durham, daughter of Charles and Mary Veranis, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a secondary emphasis in Physics . Veranis is a 2009 graduate of Coginchaug Regional High School.

The dean’s list designation is bestowed to those Keene State College undergraduates enrolled in a degree program who have completed a minimum of six credit hours in the semester, receiving no failing or incomplete grades. A 3.5 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale is required to earn the dean’s list honor.
Eastern students inducted into honor society
A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Eastern’s Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.
Ashley Pine ‘13 of Cromwell, was one of the inductees. Pine’s major is Mathematics.
Stephanie Venuti ‘13 of Killingworth, was one of the inductees. Venuti’s major is Mathematics.

The society recognizes students who have a 3.0 GPA; a B or better in each of the Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis I courses; at least a B+ average in higher level mathematics courses; and a junior or senior class standing.
Eastern students inucted into Psi Chi
A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recently inducted into Eastern’s Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society.
Brittany Bernier ‘14 of Clinton, was one of the inductees. Bernier’s major is Social Work.
Kelsea Burkhardt ‘14 of Old Saybrook, was one of the inductees. Burkhardt’s major is Psychology.
Alana Gallagher ‘15 of Killingworth, was one of the inductees. Gallagher’s major is Psychology.
Nicole Gaona ‘13 of Haddam, was one of the inductees. Gaona’s major is Communication.
Kayla Kaan ‘13 of East Haddam, was one of the inductees. Kaan’s major is Early Childhood Education.
The Department of Psychology develops students’ understanding of the diversity of human behavior and of the variables which influence it. The society encourages the stimulation and maintenance of excellence in scholarship and advancement of the science of psychology. Qualifications for inductees include declaring a major or minor in psychology; at least 12 credits of coursework in psychology or sophomore class standing; a 3.5 GPA in psychology; and a 3.0 GPA overall.
WPI announces dean’s list
The following local residents were among 1,340 students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute named to the university’s Dean’s List for academic excellence for the spring 2013 semester.
Karin Greene of Middletown is a senior majoring in biomedical engineering.
Jeffrey Ducki of Middlefield is a junior majoring in biomedical engineering.
Katie Monighetti of East Hampton is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering.
Mark Foster of Clinton is a sophomore majoring in interactive media and game development.
Krupa Patel of Clinton is a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering.
Laura Pumphrey of East Hampton is a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering.
Danielle Quinn of East Haddam is a sophomore majoring in biochemistry.
The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average. Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the A level in courses and projects.
Raymond graduates
Raianne Raymond from Middletown graduated from Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, May 18. Her major was business marketing. She is the daugther of Connie D. Raymond and Roger Liz Raymond, all of Middletown.
Local students receive degrees at Merrimack College
Local residents were among the 512 undergraduates and 162 graduate students who recently received a diploma at two separate commencement ceremonies at Merrimack College recently. This was the first time a separate commencement was held to accommodate the growing number of Masters Degree students at the College.
Sarah Stone of Ivoryton earned a Master of Science in Management in Management.
Matthew LaMalfa of Portland earned a Master of Education in Education.
Bucknell announces dean’s list
Bucknell University has released the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2012-13 academic year. A student must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.
The following local student made the dean’s list:
Emily A. Shoemaker, Middlefield, daughter of Daniel Shoemaker and MaryLou Shoemaker of Middlefield and a 2010 graduate of Coginchaug Regional High School.
Durfee earns bachelor’s degree
Jonathan Durfee of East Haddam recently graduated from Bard College at Simon’s Rock with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Studies and Philosophical Studies. Durfee attended Nathan Hale-Ray High School before leaving after 11th grade to enter college early.
Durfee was one of 124 students to graduate from the early college on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Fifty-two undergraduates received their B.A. degrees and 72 received their A.A. degrees.
Radanovich earns Quinnipiac University award
David Radanovich, of Middletown, received the Faculty Award for Academic Excellence from the graduate public relations program in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University.
This award, presented May 11 at the university’s Graduate Awards Ceremony, recognizes the student with the highest grade point average in the program, and who has distinguished themselves by completing a superior academic project and/or their contributions to the program.
