Promoting his new movie Broken City, Russell Crowe dipped into Man of Steel a bit when interviewing with Reelz. When asked about his role as Jor-El and this new take on Superman, Crowe responded: "Oh it's very complicated. It's really complex. I don't think anybody really tried to get into the psychology of what it must be like to be Superman before and what people would really respond like in a modern society if somebody like that just popped up."
Crowe continued, "I think Zach Snyder was given a great deal of responsibility because, when it comes to comic-book heroes and superhero films, the top of the food chain is Superman. I think the biggest indicator for me of how it's looking is that the financier of the film has sent me gushing emails; he loves it."
Crowe, of course, plays Superman's biological father Jor-El -- the leading scientist on the planet Krypton before its destruction. He foresaw the planet's fate but was unable to convince his colleague. However, he managed to save his son Kal-El (Superman) in time by sending him in a spaceship towards Earth before the destruction of Krypton. Marlon Brando played Jor-El in the 1978 Superman film.
Crowe explained: "I'm really looking forward to seeing it. It's a massive undertaking. It takes you on the ground to Krypton, it takes you to a planet where the sun is four times larger than ours and you get to experience that stuff." Sounds like we'll see the destruction of Krypton first-hand. In the trailer for Man of Steel, we see clips of Jor-El holding his son with his wife, probably before sending him off, and we also see footage of what looks like a planet coming apart with debris flying everywhere.
As for Superman, Crowe said, "If you've seen the trailers you realize that this Superman is not just floating through the air held up by a wire. This Superman is super sonic. I'm really looking forward to the way that people will respond to it."
Is Brandon Routh playing Superman? No? It's Henry Cavill? Yea, it'll be good. Man of Steel opens June 14.
