Religious scholars urged to learn psychology

* IIUI president says Islam gives women high status in society

ISLAMABAD: International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) President Professor Dr Ahmad Yousif Al Draiweesh said on Wednesday that other than training it is also essential for religious scholars to seek knowledge of psychology.

He was addressing the concluding ceremony of a month-long training workshop on ‘Peace and Education’ organised by the IIUI Department of Psychology in collaboration with an organization for peace and education in the capital.

“We are working to establish an atmosphere of brotherhood among the Muslim Ummah through this university, so that Muslims can face challenges of the modern age by uniting and thinking collectively,” the IIUI president also said.

He added that “Islam has gathered us at a single platform and being a Muslim it is our responsibility to promote the sense of unity among various sects of the society and explore the ways and means of cooperation amongst them”.

Dr Al Draiweesh also said, “We should adopt the source of dialogue in this respect because our Holy Prophet (PBUH) also adopted the same way with people who followed other religions.”

He stressed on the need to remove hatred and jealousy among the Muslim Ummah and added that the real essence of Islam should be preached by its scholars.

He lauded the unity of Islamic scholars belonging to various sects at the IIUI platform and said that this unity shows that “we are moving towards the right direction”.

Earlier, IIUI Faculty of Social Sciences Dean Dr Nabi Bux Jumani, IIUI Psychology Department head Dr Tahir Khalili and Syed Irshad also spoke on the occasion.

During this workshop, various lectures on the subject were delivered.

At the end, the IIUI president distributed certificates and prizes among the participants of the workshop.

On the other hand, the IIUI president addressed faculty members and administrative staff of the university’s female campus. He said that Islam provided a prestigious status to women in the society. He also said that the female faculty members and workers of IIUI “are playing their role with responsibility and sincerity, not only within the campus, but also outside the university”.

He added that teachers “are role models for the students and they should study Islam in depth, so that the real face of Islam could be introduced and propaganda against it could be properly countered”.

Dr Al Draiweesh also said that life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) “is the best model which containing guidance for us about each and every matter of life”.

He added that being a Muslim and a teacher “we should play our role within and outside of the university because this is our responsibility”.

He announced that various prizes would be awarded to teachers on their performances, as a teacher and as a social worker.

IIUI Vice President Prof Dr Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman, IIUI Academics Vice President Dr Mumtaz Ahmad and IIUI Female Campus Director Dr Zaitoon Begum, also spoke on the occasion. app
