Psychologists explore multiple identities

Following the success of the joint Divisional conference on ‘Therapeutic Interventions with a Difference: Action not Words’ held in October 2013, a follow-up event is being held today (Friday 17 October) at the University of East London.

Action not Words II: Negotiating Multiple Identities’ will emphasise and develop knowledge around culture and Black and ethnic minority experience for those involved in applied psychology, including community psychology.

The day is considering the issue of multiple identities with reference to issues of equality and diversity. Topics include migration and its effect on individual identity, human rights, social justice and psychology, the globalisation of ‘mental health’ and ‘mental illness’ and cross-cultural neuropsychology.

The day’s keynote presentations are:

  • Migration and its effect on individual identity - Dr Elaine Arnold, Retired Social Work Lecturer
  • Human rights, social justice and psychology - Dr Nimisha Patel, Clinical Psychologist Professor Rachel Tribe, Counselling Occupational Psychologist
  • Globalization of 'mental health' and 'mental illness'. Implications for the Global South - Dr Suman Fernando, Psychiatrist
  • Cross-cultural neuropsychology: from bigotry, through bias, to interaction - Dr Matthew Jones Chester, Consultant Neuro-psychologist

The event has been organised by a range of applied psychologists, including clinical, counselling and educational psychologists, with the support of several British Psychological Society Divisions.
