A Breastfeeding-Friendly Approach to Postpartum Depression

Mothers can continue to breastfeed while recovering from depression.

Amarillo, Texas (PRWEB) April 11, 2015

Praeclarus Press is excited to announce the release of A Breastfeeding-Friendly Approach to Postpartum Depression by Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph.D., IBCLC, FAPA. Dr. Kendall-Tackett specializes in women's-health research including breastfeeding, depression, trauma, and health psychology. Her research interests include the psychoneuroimmunology of maternal depression and the lifetime health effects of trauma. A Breastfeeding-Friendly Approach to Postpartum Depression is the first volume that specifically supports the depressed, breastfeeding mother.

When new mothers get depressed, health care providers are often quick to suggest that they stop breastfeeding. This advice is often contrary to what mothers want to do and these mothers may experience weaning as another significant loss. The truth is that stopping breastfeeding is often completely unnecessary. Mothers can continue to breastfeed while recovering from depression. In fact, recent studies have shown that breastfeeding can aid in their recovery. A Breastfeeding-Friendly Approach to Postpartum Depression is written in an accessible, easy-to-read format that combines recent scientific research with practical suggestions to help health care providers assist in women’s recovery from depression while honoring and supporting the breastfeeding relationship. Video links and assessment tools are also included.

For more information on the topic of the relationship between breastfeeding, depression, and abuse, please tune in next week as Dr. Kendall-Tackett is scheduled to present the keynote presentation at the annual GOLD Lactation Conference on April 13.
