Peter H. Weinberger credits his decision to pursue a career in law to a professor he met while attending Syracuse University in New York. While studying for a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology, Weinberger decided to take a constitutional law course.
“The professor was just so enthusiastic about the law and really inspired me,” said Weinberger, who is now a managing partner of Spangenberg Shibley and Liber in Cleveland. “During my junior year I made a decision not to pursue a career in psychology, but rather go to law school.”
After graduating from Syracuse University in 1972, Weinberger received his law degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 1975. He began his career working for two small law firms in Cleveland, and then joined Spagenberg in 1988 where he has worked ever since.
Weinberger is a trial lawyer who represents injured people and victims of defective products, catastrophic accidents and medical malpractice. He believes his bachelor’s degree in psychology served as a foundation for his career in law.
“Psychology melds very well with the kind of law that I practice. When you’re dealing with people who have suffered severe mental anguish and their lives have been disrupted, having some background in psychology really has helped prepare me for being able to counsel people through catastrophic events,” he said.
Weinberger said he enjoys working with clients to make their lives better through compensation. He said he also is proud of the fact that many of his cases have made a difference in terms of safer medical practices and safer designs of practice.
In the medical malpractice field, Weinberger has been involved in a handful of cases that have changed the way in which medicine is practiced. Recently, he’s been involved in several cases against pharmaceutical companies regarding dangerous drugs.
“I’ve been involved in cases from protecting patients in the operating room to surgical fires to ensuring that patients are properly diagnosed before undergoing kidney transplants,” he said. “I’ve had a number of cases that have been not only written up in settlement and verdict reports but have been used to actually change the practice of medicine and make it safer for patients.”
Weinberger has been named an Ohio Super Lawyer every year since 2005. In 2013, he was named a Top 100 Ohio lawyer as well as a Top 50 Cleveland lawyer.
He currently serves as chairman of the leadership council for the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a partnership organization supporting cancer-related research efforts at CWRU, University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Cleveland Clinic. After surviving cancer, Weinberger has become very involved in the center and hopes to continue to promote the work the center is doing to improve the lives of people in our community.
Weinberger said his work as a trial lawyer has been “rewarding.”
“The thing I enjoy most about my career is having my cases make a difference to others in terms of safe practices and safer designs of products,” he said. “It’s really rewarding to not only represent an individual client but to know the ultimate result you’re obtaining not only will change their lives, but will potentially change the lives of others.”
