The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego (PASD) is pleased to announce the launch of its Clinical Psychology Program, providing mental health services for people with Parkinson’s and their care partners.
More than fifty percent of people with Parkinson’s confront issues with depression, anxiety and changes in cognition over the course of the disease. Likewise, caring for a person with Parkinson’s can ignite complicated feelings and often depression for care partners. The Parkinson’s Clinical Psychology Program will provide support in both the group and individual setting.
“Until today, there was no program in San Diego County dedicated solely to meeting the mental health needs of people with Parkinson’s,” said PASD Executive Director Jerry Henberger. “We are very excited to be able to offer these services and contribute to the wellbeing of people with Parkinson’s.”
The Clinical Psychology Program will be staffed by Master’s level, Pre-Doctorate and Post-Doctorate students in the counseling and mental health fields, under the supervision of Kent Layton, PsyD. Services offered include therapeutic support groups, one-on-one counseling and family counseling. These services will be offered free of charge to those diagnosed with Parkinson’s or a Parkinsonian syndrome (Multiple Symptom Atrophy, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Coritocobasal Degeneration, Dementia with Lewy Bodies) and their care partners.
For more information on the Clinical Psychology Program, please contact the Parkinson’s Association at (858) 273-6763 or contactus@parkinsonsassociation.org.
