New UW-Superior faculty 2015-16 – University of Wisconsin

Along with strong enrollment of new freshman and international students this fall, the University of Wisconsin-Superior is welcoming several new faculty and instructional staff to campus. Some are familiar and others are new and have joined the faculty for the fall 2015 semester.

Provost Dr. Faith Hensrud, said the new faculty members contribute to the vitality of the university. "We look forward to their contributions as we continue to provide engaging educational experiences for our students," she said.

New Faculty and Instructional Academic Staff:

Danielle Karvonen, Senior Lecturer, Health and Wellness Management for the Department of Health and Human Performance. An alumnus of UW-Superior with a major in Wellness and Fitness Management, she holds a M.S. in Public Health from the Benedictine University and is in the process of finishing a M.S. Health Information Management from College of Saint Scholastica.

Cade Mansfield, Assistant Professor, Psychology in the Department of Human Behavior, Justice and Diversity. Mansfield earned a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Utah, a M.S. in Experimental Psychology and a B.A. in Psychology and Economics from Western Washington University.

Tanzeem Iqbal Ali, Assistant Professor, Science Education in the Department of Educational Leadership. Currently holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wyoming, M.Sc. in Natural Resource Management from Asian Institute of Technology and a B.Sc. in Environmental Management from Independent University, Bangladesh.

Amanda Zbacnik, Assistant Professor, Teacher Education in the Department of Educational Leadership. She earned her Doctor of Education in Leadership from St. Mary's University of Minnesota. An alumnus of UW-Superior with degrees in M.Sc. in Education and B.A. in Music Education, Zbacnik has eight years of experience teaching special education within the areas school districts.

Brian Welsh, Assistant Professor, Counseling in the Department of Educational Leadership. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Professional Diploma in Counseling, M.Sc. in Counseling, and B.S. in Human Services and Education/Psychology all from St. John's University in Jamaica, NY. Welsh has 20 years in the counseling field.

Jenean O'Brien, Assistant Professor, Biology in the Department of Natural Sciences. She earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Cancer Biology from the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center and a B.A in Biology from the College of Saint Scholastica.

Alison Wielgus, Assistant Professor, Media Studies in the Department of Communicating Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Film Studies and M.S. in Film Studies from the University of Iowa, and also a B.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University.

Amy Carpenter, Senior Lecturer, Reading in the Department of Educational Leadership. B.Sc. in Arts and Elementary Education with Kindergarten Endorsement from Bethel College. M.Sc. in Elementary Reading and Literacy from Walden University. She is in the process of finishing a M.Sc. in Special Education from St. Mary's. Carpenter has 16 years of teaching in several different school districts across the nation and was also a Field Experience Coordinator with the Department of Educational Leadership in 2011.

Kathleen Buday, Assistant Professor, Art Therapy in the Department of Visual Arts. M.Ed. in Art Education with an Art Therapy Variant from Wayne State University. B.A. in Studio Art from Kalamazoo College. Buday holds an ART-B.S. with the Art Therapy Credentials Board in Greensboro, NC. She has over 20 years of experience in the Art and Art Therapy fields.

Starting Spring 2016:

Rachel VanHornweder, Senior Lecturer, Accounting in the Department of Business and Economics. An alumnus of UW-Superior with a B.S. in Accounting. M.Sc. in Taxation from DePaul University. She has 10 years of experience in the Tax Field with six years at a local public accounting firm.
