The National Association of Professional Women honors Cynthia D. Barker, Psy.D., Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist at Greater Austin Counseling Center as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Barker is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in Family Counseling. As the largest, most-recognized networking organization of professional women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
“Even before considering my current profession, people always came to me for advice,” said Dr. Cynthia Barker, who is passionate about helping people manage their lives after suffering traumatic events.
Dr. Barker’s professional experience includes 20 years of providing skilled counseling for US Marine, Navy and Army military personnel. A Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Court Mediator, she specialized in counseling, identification of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and related interpersonal maladies and therapies that focused on family violence, interpersonal issues and treatments.
Retired from Fort Hood Army Substance Abuse Program, Dr. Barker is currently in private practice at the Greater Austin Counseling Center. While she has extensive experience working with children, she now focuses primarily on adults, particularly, trauma, post-military traumas, grief and loss. Dr. Barker also completed Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing training (EMDR) which has been proven to be an effective treatment to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. EMDR training is approved by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and many other international health agencies.
Dr. Barker received a Master of Science in Psychology from the University of La Verne and her Doctor of Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. After raising three wonderful and productive children, Dr. Barker is enjoying her current role as a grandparent.
