Luther College has announced the appointment of a number of faculty for the upcoming year, effective August 2014.
Xiaolin Duan
Xiaolin Duan of Seattle is a visiting assistant professor of history at Luther.
Duan was previously employed as an instructor at the University of Washington and the Chinese Art Curator Assistant at the Seattle Art Museum.
She holds a number of awards for her academic work, including the Cyrus Tang Fellowship, a Blakemore Internship and a Fritz and Boeing Graduate Fellowship for Interational Research and Study.
Duan holds a bachelor's degree in history and art history from Peking University, a master's degree in history from the University of Washington. She is currently working on a doctoral degree in history from the University of Washington.
Tony Mutsune
Tony Mutsune of Mt. Pleasant is associate professor management and economics at Luther.
Mutsune was previously employed as a professor of economics and business at Iowa Wesleyan College and Jackson State University. His teaching interests include business strategy, fundamentals of investments and international economics.
His current research on how economic enterprises generate sustainable competitiveness in a global economy. He has given presentations related to this topic at the Institute of Business and Finance Research Global Conference and the International Symposium on Small Business Synergy.
Mutsune holds a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctoral degree in business administration from Jackson State University.
Rachel Brummel
Rachel Brummel of Easton, Penn. as assistant professor of environmental studies at Luther.
Brummel was previously employed as an assistant professor in environmental studies at Lafayette College. She has also served as a postdoctoral research associate and an instructor at the University of Minnesota-St. Paul.
Her environmental research has taken her to a number of cities around the Midwest, including St. Paul, Minn.; Iowa City and Grinnell. Brummel was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year, for which she traveled to Australia to conduct research with bushfire planning groups.
Brummel is a member of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences, the Society for Conservation Biology and the International Association for Wildland Fire.
She holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Grinnell College and a doctoral degree in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Maren Johnson
Maren Johnson of Firecrest, Wash. is assistant professor of Scandinavian studies at Luther.
Johnson previously was employed as a teaching assistant in the Scandinavian studies department at the University of Washington where she taught first and second-year Norwegian language courses.
Her academic research explores artists who contributed to the Scandinavian cultural identity, including Henrik Ibsen and Hans Christian Andersen.
Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in Norwegian language and literature from Pacific Lutheran University and master's and doctoral degrees in Scandinavian language and literature from the University of Washington.
Jill Wilson
Jill Wilson of Prairie du Chien, Wis. is assistant professor of education and coordination for music education at Luther.
Wilson previously was employed as an instructor of music education at Morningside College and a graduate course facilitator at Boston University. She also has served as a choir director at the First Presbytarian Church and Augustana Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
Her pieces on choral education have been published in "Research in Music Education" and "G.E.M.S. (Gender, Education, Music and Society)" as well as presented at the Iowa Choral Directors Association Summer Symposium and the North Dakota Music Educators Association conference.
Wilson holds a bachelor's degree in music education from St. Olaf College, a master's degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa and a doctoral degree in music education from Boston University.
Brittany Cord
Brittany Cord of Decorah as visiting instructor of accounting and management at Luther.
Cord previously was employed as an instructor at Northeast Iowa Community College where she taught introductory and intermediate level accounting classes. She has also served as a budget analyst and manager of financial planning at Texas AM University.
Cord also has worked for JPI Partners, Siegwerk USA, Inc. and Head USA, Inc.
She holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in business administration from Texas AM University.
Elaine Bossard
Elaine Bossard of West Liberty is visiting assistant professor of psychology at Luther.
Bossard was previously employed as a teaching assistant and an instructor at the University of Iowa. She taught courses on social psychology and a psychology lab on judgment and decision-making.
She has co-written two articles for the "Journal of Behavioral Decision Making" and contributed to a number of manuscripts in preparation.
Bossard is a member of the Society for Judgment and Decision Making, the Midwestern Psychology Association, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and has participated in conference presentations for all of them.
She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology, magna cum laude, and is pursuing a doctoral degree in social psychology from the University of Iowa.
