GIPPSLAND child psychologist Doris Ricardo is now believed to be a favourite among parents following the success of her innovative English learning methodology.

Ms Ricardo, who invented the Ricardo Reading Method, a learning tool that uses positive psychology and auditory learning, has received "incredible results" following its implementation in some Gippsland schools.

"I started writing a book a few years ago, but I just didn't have the time to complete it and it was too complex, so I decided to try implementing it instead," Ms Ricardo said.

"It's really a home centred project, so there's no school influence and it bring the parents back into the child's learning.

"I believe the parent is the best teacher because the biggest influence on a child's life is their parent."

The Ricardo Reading Method is a three step process involving the child's use of the brain's hearing sensors, as compared to the traditional visual approach.

The parent is first asked to read to the child, while the child's eyes are closed, targeting the auditory function of the brain.

The child is then asked to read the same passage, using recognition skills to process the words previously enunciated by the parent.

The benefits of the method was praised by Churchill resident Richelle Rowed, who noticed a "significant change" in her son Hudson's reading and spelling levels.

"Doris showed the method to Hudson and since the day he picked it up, he can spell every single word he's tried," Ms Rowed said.

"His punctuality has also improved and in six weeks, he's gone from level 19 to level 27."

Ms Rowed said Hudson, a grade one student at Churchill North Primary School, now approached spelling different words as a challenge.

"He loves it; he keeps saying, 'give me something more difficult Mum'," she said.

"Earlier, he had his spelling tests at school but I wouldn't know what words he was learning.

"Now I'm more involved in his work and it just keeps me in touch with what he's doing at school."
