Joseph B. Hellige has been named LMU's executive vice president and provost, according to a university-wide email sent out by President David W. Burcham at approximately 9:08 a.m. this morning.
Hellige, whose selection, according to the email, "received the enthusiastic support of the executive committee of LMU’s Board of Trustees," began working at LMU in 2007 as the inaugural vice president for research and dean of graduate studies. And since 2010, he has worked under the title of senior vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer.
Burcham's email also commended Hellige on his success in previous positions, while also keeping "LMU’s Catholic, Jesuit and Marymount missions a primary focus."
"As chief academic officer, Joe successfully chaired the University’s Strategic Planning Committee, which established goals for LMU’s future academic, educational and program growth," read Burcham's campus-wide email. "He also played vital leadership roles in the development of the University’s new core curriculum and in revising LMU’s faculty rank and tenure procedures."
Hellige holds a B.A. from St. Mary's College in Minnesota as well as M.A. and Ph.D degrees in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has also worked as a professor of psychology at the University of Southern California (USC), where he was the chair of the Psychology Department for seven years. Additionally, he was the vice provost for academic programs and dean of the USC Graduate School for seven years as well.
Be sure to check this Thursday's issue of the Loyolan for more in-depth coverage of Hellige.
