BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
Ashlee Brackeen is a newly-minted Psychology major from LSU. Because of who she is, Ashlee rode her bicycle, wearing her robes to her departmental graduation Friday.
"I ride my bike to school every day, but for graduation I wanted to wear the gown, and so I did that today. It was fun," laughed Ashlee while at a graduation party Friday evening.
Brackeen says she's been riding since she was a kid, but really became a full-time cyclist when she started college. For one thing, she says getting around town is so much easier because of Red Stick's full-time traffic nightmare. Ashlee says she may be groggy when she gets up in the morning, but things change once she gets on the bike.
"For me, the biggest thing that makes me enjoy being outside," she says "It wakes me up before I get there, and I get there way faster than I would in my car. It's just more efficient for me, and it's way better."
Brackeen says she and her roommate have been active in Baton Rouge bicycle events. She highly recommends Bike Baton Rouge as an organization that's fun, informative and can get you ready for your own bicycle lifestyle.
As for our psychology graduate, Brackeen says her next move has been taken. She has applied to City Year in New York to volunteer for a year in a needy area of an American city. She finds out May 30 if she's accepted. Plan B, after that, could include living in a Spanish-speaking country to become fluent in Spanish.
Friday, May 15 was national Ride Your Bike To Work Day which makes Ashlee practically a poster child for the holiday!
