Fifteen receive John Frederick Steinman fellowships

The John Frederick Steinman Foundation has selected 15 students as recipients of 2014 fellowships.


These fellowships are available to students pursuing advanced degrees in mental health fields.

Named for John F. Steinman, former publisher of Lancaster Newspapers Inc., the fellowships carry a total value of $60,000.

This is the 52nd year that fellowships have been granted for master’s or doctoral level study in psychiatry, psychology and social work.

Six of the students were previous winners. They are:

• Maria Del Carpio, 51, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Temple University.

• David Dietrich, 28, Lititz, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University.

• Melissa Finney, 26, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Temple University.

• Steven Pagden, 40, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University.

• Kristen Smith, 40, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University.

• Chad Wickenheiser, 33, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University.

The new winners for 2014 are:

• Joshua Bashore-Steury, 28, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University. Bashore-Steury received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Wright State University.

• Ryan Davies, 23, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Temple University. Davies received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy/ethics from Millersville University.

• Riannon Fisher, 23, Manheim, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University. Fisher received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Millersville University.

• Caitlynn Hill, 25, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in clinical psychology at Millersville University. Hill received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Elizabethtown College.

• Desiree Hipple, 26, Elizabethtown, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University. Hipple received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Penn State University.

• Jesse Main, 32, Lancaster, who is working toward a doctor of psychology degree in clinical psychology at Immaculata University. Main received a bachelor’s degree in psychology and political science from Millersville University and a master’s degree in clinical psychology from La Salle University.

• Aleda Risser, 23, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Millersville University. Risser received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Millersville University.

• Lori Walton, 35, Lancaster, who is working toward a master’s degree in social work at Temple University. Walton received a bachelor’s degree in recreation and park management from Penn State University.

• Amanda Yost, 35, Manheim, who is working toward a Master of Science in nursing at Drexel University. Yost received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Millersville University.   

Including the most recent recipients, 336 students have received a total of $1,688,840 in study grants since the fellowship program was established in 1963.

In selecting grant recipients, preference is given to those who obligate themselves to practice their profession in a location serving residents of Lancaster County for at least the number of years fellowship support is received.
