A youngster from Feltham needs your generosity to embark on a charitable journey to help trauma sufferers in Sri Lanka in the summer.
Emma Worley of Elizabeth Way in Feltham, former student at Feltham Community College who achieved two A*s and an A at A-level, is now a first year student studying Psychology at University of York.
The 18-year-old has secured a placement with SLV, a charitable scheme which offers students and graduates work experience in Sri Lanka but needs your help to raise £2,400 to fund the volunteering trip.
During her five week trip she will be living with a local family, and working to help people with mental health conditions who have lived through traumatic events including tsunami survivors and people who have experienced civil conflict in the country.
Her placement will include supporting care workers and helping to provide psychological care to individuals in care homes, psychiatric units and rehabilitation centres, as well as teaching English to large crowds and working with children with special needs.
In August last year Emma spent three weeks in South Africa with Hillcrest Aids charity working in a local township school redecorating the school and teaching Maths and English to orphaned children.
Miss Worley said: ”I was inspired to do this project because it is a mental health placement working with trauma sufferers and not only would it be a great opportunity to witness and practise psychological care, but because I am studying Psychology at university and wanting to pursue a career in this clinical field, it would provide me with great hands-on experience.
“Even though my project last summer in South Africa wasn’t psychology related, it was an incredible experience and doing voluntary work in cultures and societies where they are in need of support, Sri Lanka is an opportunity I couldn’t miss.”
The £2,400 trip includes return flights, the placement and workshops.
Emma plans to self-fund part of the trip through fundraising events at university as well as working part time but needs your donations to make up the rest.
She said: “I want to make a difference to the lives of under privileged children both here and in the developing world, and anything you can do in helping me achieve that will be gratefully received.”
