Diverse ideas on social psychology through the lens

ISLAMABAD: A group exhibition of around 40 art pieces by five established artists continues at the Satrang Gallery, featuring diverse ideas and mediums that explore social psychology and different stages of life.

Ilona Yousaf, Lali Khalid, Fazal Rizvi, Bakr Hussain and Azanat Mansoor are the participating artists in the show that will continue until November 20.

The show titled ‘Transient Glimpses’ is a multi-faceted photography-based exhibition preserving elapsed memories and exploring former relationships.

Through the intricacies of texture, the rhythm of light and the dimensioning of layering, these artists compose elaborate odes to the past, says Zahra Khan, curator of the show.

According to her, photography is generally believed to be a truthful medium – an exact representation of what the artistes see before them. The participating artistes in this exhibition, have manipulated photographic procedures and combined the works with other art-making processes to achieve specific combinations and themes.

Ilona Yusuf draws the viewers into the exhibition’s frontiers through her elegant renderings of Makli Hill, the heritage site of the ruins of one of the largest ancient necropolises in the world.

Yusuf’s prints, which document her exploration of Makli, depict its crumbling and weathered edifices and silently comment upon the passage of time. Her compositions emphasises on the rapport between vivid light and visible texture.

“In the series of etchings based on photographs taken at Makli, one of my interests has been the effects of weathering – the way hot dry desert wind has eaten into terracotta and sandstone,” Ilona says.

Bakr Hussain explores man’s traces on earth by presenting his lasting impressions of surroundings. The artiste captures his ideas with the medium of photo transfer through titles, “Absence and death are the same”, “Absence of fear”,

“Mystery of fear”, “Opposition to socialism”, “Peace is not absence of conflict”, “There is no suffering”, and “Slavery”.

Fazal Rizvi has worked on themes of preservation in which he edits and distorts old family photographs, recreating the circumstances of these familial scenes, while Azanat Mansoor creates photo transfers, merging photography and print making. Her pieces vacillate between comfortable scenes of joy and solitary moments. app
