Dayna wins navy scholarship

DISPLAYING core navy values of courage, commitment and comradeship has earned a Gisborne student a $3000 scholarship.

Campion College leaver Dayna Story will head to the University of Auckland next year to study a conjoint degree in law and psychology.

Earlier this month she was awarded the University of Auckland Chancellor’s Award for Top Maori and Pacific Island Scholars, worth $35,000.

The Royal New Zealand Navy Scholarship is her second award. Lytton High School, Gisborne Boys’ High, Gisborne Girls’ High and Campion College each put forward an applicant each year for the award, and a panel from RNZN chooses the recipient.

Lieutenant Commander Tony Pereira was on hand to present the award to Dayna, on behalf of Chief of Navy Rear Admiral John Martin.

“Dayna is a go-getter, he said. “She works hard, pushes through barriers and is the epitome of core navy values. She is a very deserving recipient.

Dayna says the money will go towards the cost of text books.

“It is an honour. I would like to say a big thank you for all of the support I have received.

Two of Dayna’s biggest supporters are dad Dean Story and mum Trish Bradley.

“She has worked really hard and definitely deserves all of her successes, says Ms Bradley.

The Royal New Zealand Navy Scholarship was established in 2009 to replace the Blackpool Scholarship.
