ALLAHABAD: These are a few thoughts scribbled by some children on paper in tests conducted during their counselling sessions at the state government's bureau of psychology. Theses kids were brought by their parents at the bureau for counselling session after they performed poor in school tests and were found bunking schools.
On Saturday, a student of a prominent convent school, during a similar counselling session, blamed his parents for suppressing him and his views and even labelled 'communication-gap' as a 'tradition' in his house.
Counsellors and psychologists at the bureau termed this attitude of children as a behavioural problem caused by the lack of communication between parents and children.
The counsellors are also devising new ways to deal with the problems of school going children, between the age of 8 to 12 years who openly revolting against their parents, during such sessions. They design special counselling sessions for these children as well as their parents.
"It is a new trend that we are observing in the families now. Parents should be the role-model for their children but in the present era the communication-gap is so deep that it has started resulting in a sense of detachment in the relations. It is a bad sign for the society as well," said Dr Kamlesh Tiwari, counsellor, Bureau of Psychology.
Psychologists also blame lack of warmth among parents and children in home for kids coming out with such views about their parents.
"Now we do not communicate in our mother tongues at home. Parents have a habit of intruding in long sentences with the usage of harsh words while talking to their child," said Meenu Kishore, psychologist at the Bureau. She said the foreign language is mainly English or Hindi in case mother tongue is a regional language.
During the session the students were given questionnaire divided into four sections. The first 30 questions dealt with 'house and family', 40 questions were related to 'school', 35 with 'you and other problems' while remaining 40 were regarding to 'health and other problems'. An additional column was also made in the questionnaire so as to ensure that students could pen down other problems they were suffering from.
"Students were found to be depressed with several issues which made them feel that life has no meaning and the thought of committing suicide also comes to them," said Dr Tiwari.
Bureau of Psychology was established in 1947 and has been working as a unit ofr State Ccouncil of Education Research and Training since 1981. It works to provide counselling to students of secondary schools including GIC affiliated with UP Board. It also conducts survey and takes test to know the IQ of students from time to time.
