BOSTON — Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Baker can now claim front-runner status in the race for governor as he edges out longtime Democratic favorite Attorney General Martha Coakley in the latest poll of the race.
Baker topped the Boston Globe's weekly tracking poll for the first time since the daily newspaper started conducting the poll. He was the choice of 38 percent of respondents while Coakley picked up the support of 37 percent.
The poll of 605 likely voters was conducted over two three-day periods, from August 17-19 and August 24-26, and had a margin of error of +/- 4percent. The poll does not mention the three independent candidates running, Evan Falchuk, Scott Lively and Jeff McCormick, though recent polling has not shown any of the three independents to crack double digits.
Baker leads the two other potential Democratic gubernatorial nominees in a fall matchup. He tops Treasurer Steve Grossman (37 percent to 33 percent) and former Medicare administrator Don Berwick (44 percent to 19 percent).
Coakley maintained a large lead over her two rivals for the Democratic nomination in the latest poll with the support of 46 percent of respondents. Grossman scooped up 24 percent while Donald Berwick landed backing from 10 percent of likely Democratic voters.
Recent polling by the Boston Herald shows Baker trouncing his Republican primary opponent businessman Mark Fisher in the September primary.
The race for the attorney general continues to be the tightest race in the Commonwealth as Maura Healey and Warren Tolman are all tied up at 30 percent.
Additionally polling Boston Globe data shows that the vast majority of voters continue to remain undecided about the races for lieutenant governor and treasurer.
