Seven conferences, including one focused on traffic and transport psychology, booked for Brisbane in just one month will inject $16 million into the Brisbane economy according to City Hall.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the conferences, secured by the convention arm of the council's economic development agency, were valued in relation to the number of delegates they would bring - about 5,600 over the next two years.
But the events, which come as Brisbane prepares for the 2014 G20 summit, were also significant enough also gave Brisbane a boost in the international conference market, Cr Quirk said.
“Brisbane's growing appeal to conference organisers is also reflected in the latest International Congress and Convention Association City (ICCA) Rankings,” he said.
“We jumped to 56th on the list with 40 meetings in 2012, up from a ranking of 87 with 24 meetings in 2011.
“These wins confirm that Brisbane is a hotspot for conventions in the Asia-Pacific.”
The bids, some of which saw Brisbane Marketing partner up with otherwise rivals the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, include the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference, the Australian Lung Cancer Conference and the International Congress on Traffic and Transport Psychology.
Cr Quirk said such conferences injected over $250 million a year into the local economy, and also attracted talent and investment to the city.
Brisbane Marketing Convention Bureau Director Annabel Sullivan said the secret to success lay in the city's ability to provide an “effortless one-stop-shop” of advice and support services to event planners.
“Brisbane Marketing's services include assisting with bidding for national or international conferences right through to promoting conferences to potential delegates,” she said.
“We also offer a great range of online tools including our recently revamped Brisbane Event Planner, Australia's only dedicated online city directory.”
