Virginia Commonwealth University professors Shawn Utsey and Jeff South have received Fulbright Scholar grants to travel abroad next year.
Utsey, professor of counseling psychology in the Department of Psychology, will conduct a yearlong oral history project examining to what degree apartheid continues to affect the people of South Africa.
He will collaborate on apartheid-era ethnoviolence at the Sinomlando Center for Oral History and Memory Work at the University of KwaZulu Natal.
South, an associate professor in the School of Mass Communications and director of the Capital News Service, will teach journalism and mass communications courses for a semester at Northeast Normal University in Changchun in northeastern China.
The courses will be taught in English for the university’s spring semester, which runs from February through July.
